At Aldenham we have four very active fleets. Sailing regularly throughout the year on Sundays we have fleets of RS 300s,  Lasers, Enterprises and Illusion keel boats. In the summer we have an active Wednesday evening series of races. We also have a handicap fleet that includes a diverse range of boats including Picos and Toppers. For those not interested in racing we have an active cruising fleet that normally meets each weekend.

The Open started in fairly light winds which improved during the day and provided excellent racing in glorious sunshine.  There were thirteen starters of whom four were visitors, from Grafham, Ely and Rugby & Daventry SC. The winners were (again!) Phil and Laura Bevan from Grafham Water, followed by Martin and Laurence Davies from Rugby. The first ASC boat was helmed by Antony Cole and crewed by Andrew Holmes, taking third place. Fourth were junior prize winners Scott Bilham and Jack Camman, who equalled the third placed boat on points.

A vote of thanks was proposed for the OD crew led by Barry Steel and Mark Donnelly, and the galley team again consisting of the female side of the Hallé family.

The Open took place in light winds and attracted eleven starters of whom three were visitors, from Draycote, Elmsworth and the RAF (Steve Sharpe, ex-ASC). Unusually five races of approximately 30 minutes each were contested, perhaps a template for the future as this provided close racing and the winner was not decided until the final race. It was Richard Le Mare from Draycote SC who took the honours from Aldenham's Pete Ellis, with local hero Barry Steel a good third. A race report will be posted on the Yachts and Yachting website.

Richard proposed  a vote of thanks for the OD crew led by Colin Carver and the galley team consisting of the female side of the Hallé family.

Here are a selection of photos from this year's event.

The morning kicked off with light showers, a moderate south to south westerly breeze. As the morning progressed, so did the winds and rain with gusts exceeding force four - creating three challenging races. Despite the rain, turnout was good with 21 drenched sailors on the start line: 14 from Aldenham and seven guests.

Winner of the meeting was A Bishop(Girton SC) with S Barrett (FG SC) in second place – both guest sailors. Andy Omasta (ASC) made a great start winning the first race. He took fourth place in the second race, third in the final and finishing third overall. Barefoot sailor, Nick Turner decided his race strategy would be sailing without any footwear. Unfortunately his outhaul failed before starting the second race and had to return to base. ASC Fleet captain, Simon Paish said, “I wasn’t anywhere that made any difference,” but still made a respectable finish in twelve position.

Bob Jones and his dedicated AOD team meticulously timed and recorded the event with Swiss-watch precision; while Julia Jenkin’s team provided vital sustenance to all present. - Many thanks to them all.

The Cruising Fleet Print E-mail
Cruising
2-picosThe Cruising Fleet is for those members who enjoy a quiet, non competitive sail, in company with others. Those who sail with the Fleet bring a variety of boats to the weekend sailing sessions. Currently there are, at the last count, eight Mirrors, a Cormorant, a Miracle, a Comet Versa,an RS Vision,a Laser2, a Gull Spirit,an Enterprise, a GP14,a Pico, a Wayfarer, and the Fleet Captain's Windmill.  There are also a number of  members who sail with the Fleet in addition to taking part in the Sunday morning racing. The Cruising Fleet provides them with an opportunity to practice sailing skills and improve techniques without  being put under pressure. And so the occasional Laser can be seen on the water on Sunday afternoons, and even the odd RS300. One member hedges his sailing options by bringing a Mirror, an Enterprise, and an RS300 to the lake, and can be seen, after the morning racing, demonstrating his very personal skill of changing tack in an RS300 whilst turning a double somersault on the hog.
