The fleet at Aldenham boasts more than 50 Lasers of which, on a good day, some 20 or more can be found racing. Usual fleet sizes are in to double figures as demonstrated on the results pages.

The morning kicked off with light showers, a moderate south to south westerly breeze. As the morning progressed, so did the winds and rain with gusts exceeding force four - creating three challenging races. Despite the rain, turnout was good with 21 drenched sailors on the start line: 14 from Aldenham and seven guests.
Winner of the meeting was A Bishop(Girton SC) with S Barrett (FG SC) in second place – both guest sailors. Andy Omasta (ASC) made a great start winning the first race. He took fourth place in the second race, third in the final and finishing third overall. Barefoot sailor, Nick Turner decided his race strategy would be sailing without any footwear. Unfortunately his outhaul failed before starting the second race and had to return to base. ASC Fleet captain, Simon Paish said, “I wasn’t anywhere that made any difference,” but still made a respectable finish in twelve position.
Bob Jones and his dedicated AOD team meticulously timed and recorded the event with Swiss-watch precision; while Julia Jenkin’s team provided vital sustenance to all present. - Many thanks to them all.

You might suggest that the Laser fleet is a pretty hot fleet, and of course I'd have to agree, but the fleet has embarked on a two day training programme this year under the RYA's Activate your Laser Fleet programme. The two busy days led by RYA Regional Club Coach Ben Iliffe focused on a wide range of key skills - roll tacks and gybes - mark rounding - where to sit - rig tuning and starting. A one point there was strong animal feel as one part of the 14 strong fleet performed 'elephants ears' while the others were doing 'rabbit starts' (hard in Aldenham's wind shifts). I'm sure though that none of us will miss the calls to do another practise 360 degree turn - as we certainly lost count of those!! We all left with a strong feeling of time well spent and a desire to hold on to as much of the information as possible. Many thanks to Ben, and the organisers Mike & Simon.
Some pics below - more will be added as they arrive.

Towards the end of last year there was some discussion about what we want to do as a fleet which resulted in an informal fleet "AGM" in November, with the aim of getting things organised and people more involved.
There was a very brief discussion, from which the main points raised were:
- Communication - Notice board/email list/online forum/Facebook page
- Having a Key Day - To encourage people to go sailing
- Selecting 3 or 4 open meetings that we will target
- Security
- Training
- Social
It was a small but enthusiastic beginning - Mike Wilcock volunteered to be Training Rep., Francis Newman volunteered to be communications Rep and Clay Davies was subsequently volunteered to be Social Rep.! So expect to hear or see something new shortly! If you have an idea or wish to get involved just volunteer!
