RS300

RS300-mark-640

The RS300 is the most recent class to be introduced at Aldenham and currently comprises a Fleet of 7 RS300s – all of whom sail competitively on a regular basis. The boat is to quote the Yachts and Yachting review‘ not for the faint-hearted and is the F1 of single-handed dinghys’. The RS 300 is a boat that is very demanding to sail, but which rewards the helm with outstanding response and leaves a smile on your face every time you go out. To get an insight into the RS 300 see this video from YouTube.

Aldenham’s Fleet is now amongst the largest in the UK and, in the process, is generating considerable interest. We recently held a RS 300 training day with a Class Coach and plan further training sessions and take part in a regular racing programme – for more details please contact either the Class Captain or any of Aldenham’s RS 300 sailors when we are at the club – normally between 1000 and 1400 on Sundays.

RS300 Open Meeting 2011 - Photos Print E-mail
RS300linex300

The Open took place in light winds and attracted eleven starters of whom three were visitors, from Draycote, Elmsworth and the RAF (Steve Sharpe, ex-ASC). Unusually five races of approximately 30 minutes each were contested, perhaps a template for the future as this provided close racing and the winner was not decided until the final race. It was Richard Le Mare from Draycote SC who took the honours from Aldenham's Pete Ellis, with local hero Barry Steel a good third. A race report will be posted on the Yachts and Yachting website.

Richard proposed  a vote of thanks for the OD crew led by Colin Carver and the galley team consisting of the female side of the Hallé family.

Here are a selection of photos from this year's event.
Thanks to Francis Newman.

In all true great democracies of the world, a position at the top table becomes vacant, there is a scrupulously fair election process and you have a new leader. Alas, at Aldenham things don't always follow the traditional course and by hook and by crook (I was ambushed, my Lord!!!!) you have a new RS 300 class captain.

But first credit and thanks must go to my predecessor Steve. Through his sterling efforts, hard work and trailing around the country over the last couple of years, Aldenham is now the biggest fleet in the country. Now the onus is on the current fleet members to maintain that presence, keep up attendances and if at all possible explore the outside world beyond home waters. Well done to the stalwarts who have continued to sail throughout the winter, don't worry spring will soon be around the corner when the rest of the fleet will join in.

Though the medium of email (even Bazza has worked that one out – but I hear he can't resist standing up whilst logged on), the RS crew have been kept up to date regarding various events for 2011, so I won't repeat them all, but highlights to look forward to this year:

2/3 April 2011 – Oxford SC – First local open meeting

Saturday 16 April 2011RS 300 Training at ASC by the RS Southern Area coach – Hopefully all our local RSs will attend, and any Laser sailors secretly interested in joining the mayhem that is the 300 fleet, (but don't want to confess to your mates), come down and have a look!

23 to 26 August 2011 – National Championships - Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy – This is a grand All RS class event to test the Olympic sailing venue and a great opportunity to tread where the stars will be sailing in 2012. So far Bazza and yours truly have confirmed to fly the Aldenham flag.

Saturday 24 September 2011 – ASC Open
