ASC is members run club and we seek to offer a number or courses to welcome young and old(er) people into what we consider to be a fantastic sport. However because we are a members club, our resources to run courses are limited.

In this section you can find information on the

The club itself is a dinghy racing club and the aim of the club's training programme is to help people who wish to join the club's racing programme. To progress from a complete novice to someone who can take part in club racing, it would be normal to undertake both a Start Sailing and a Start Racing course, which could be done in one year with practice, but normally two.

For Children we will restrict our courses to those who are part of  the clubs 'sailing families' and offer a course in the first part of the season to help develop skills and gain certificates followed by a more informal non RYA series of practice sessions arranged by the parents/carers of those who are interested. (For this latter part  it's therefore important that the children are supported by parents/carers who are familiar with sailing.)

When we have a course that is open for applications we will make an announcement on the  Booking Courses page which will include details of costs and exact dates. If you have any questions please complete the training enquiry form and we will be happy to respond by email.

Membership
All Courses at ASC are offered to only to club members. For information on membership please contact the Membership Secretary or have a look at the About the Club Section. (Fees are detailed in that section)

Where we teach
All sessions take place on Aldenham Reservoir, Elstree, and are led by suitably qualified club instructors. All the instructors, who freely give of their time, are volunteers taken from the club membership. For children's courses it's very important parents stay on site to help their children with boat rigging/stowing/safety ashore as the boats are often too heavy for children to move.

  • For Children Starting Sailing - the basic skills course for children in single handers.
The course will be based on the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme and will run on Saturday and Sundays normally in April/May/June, with the aim of taking participants to the next stage of the YSS. It is aimed at existing club membership and for that reason an ASC Family membership is required for this course. For more information please see the Course Outlines page.

Other Courses.

The club also provides other courses:

  • RYA Powerboat course - Essential for all club members who might use the safety boat, this course is run on demand in winter normally.

  • Enterprise Training Day. An absolute must for ASC Enterprise Sailors covering all aspects of racing the Ent.  Normally held in March each year. For details please contact the class captain.

Other Assistance, Using our Boats Print E-mail

Aldenham Sailing Club welcomes sailors of all abilities into our club racing, which takes place on Sundays and on summer Wednesday evenings. Experienced members are always willing to lend a hand or offer some friendly advice.

Our training boats; Oppies & Picos are also available for members to use when Training courses are not running and after users have demonstrated a suitable level of competency and for a small fee. We also have a small number of lease boats available on a longer term to members whilst they find your way into the club’s activities.

Please see the Club boats section of this website for more details.
