ASC aims to provide a range of courses to develop Dinghy Racing Skills in Adults and Young people.
Our Courses
ASC is members run club and we seek to offer a number or courses to welcome young and old(er) people into what we consider to be a fantastic sport. However because we are a members club, and warmly welcome new members, our resources to run courses are limited. Currently we have on offer the following courses which run at specific times of the year.
The club itself is a dinghy racing club and the aim of the club's training programme is to help people who wish to join the club's racing programme and develop the skills they need to do that. To progress from a complete novice to someone who can take part in club racing, it would be normal to undertake both a Start Sailing and a Start Racing course, which could be done in one year with practice.
For Children we will restrict our courses to those who are part of 'sailing families' and offer a course in the first part of the season to help develop skills and gain certificates followed by a more informal non RYA series of practice sessions arranged by the parents/carers of those who are interested. (For this latter part it's therefore important that the children are supported by parents/carers who are familiar with sailing.)
Course Summary
- For Children - Starting Sailing - the basic skills course for children in single handers.
The course will be based on the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme and will run on 4 Saturday afternoons in normally in April/May/June, with the aim of taking participants to the next stage of the YSS. It is aimed at existing club membership and for that reason an ASC Family membership is required for this course. For more information please see the Course Outlines page.
Other Courses.
The club also provides other courses:
-
RYA Powerboat course - Essential for all club members who might use the safety boat, this course is run on demand in winter normally.
-
Enterprise Training Day. An absolute must for ASC Enterprise Sailors covering all aspects of racing the Ent. Normally held in March each year. For details please contact the class captain.
Getting on our courses.
When we have a course that is open for applications we will make an annoucement on the Dates, Costs & Availability page which will include details of costs and exact dates. If you have any questions please complete the training enquiry form and we will be happy to respond by email.
Membership All Courses at ASC are offered to only to club members. For information on membership please contact the Membership Secretary or have a look at the About the Club Section. (Fees are detailed in that section)
Where we teach All sessions take place on Aldenham Reservoir, Elstree, and are led by suitably qualified club instructors. All the instructors, who freely give of their time, are volunteers taken from the club membership. For children's courses it's very important parents stay on site to help their children with boat rigging/stowing/safety ashore as the boats are often too heavy for children to move.
Just have a go? If you want to just have a go then the best time to come down is for the Club Open day held in the Spring (see club calendar) - it's then that we run taster sessions alternatively book to come on our taster day. Otherwise come down to the club on Sunday mornings when members are normally racing so you can see us in action.

Courses Full? We do realise that we don't have the facilities to meet current demands. Alternatives are to look for commercial centres through the RYA or you can register your interest via our Training Dates Page for future courses. You can find the RYA here: RYA website. We can also recommend Fellowship Afloat, while not in the London region, it's a great place to learn to sail, runs fun courses, and it's only an hour and a half away. |
