A course for children to introduce the basics of sailing. This course is aimed at existing ASC club members. The course follows the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme stages 1, 2 and 3.

We teach children sailing in small individual dinghies called Oppies.The course will be run on four Saturday or Sunday afternoons in April/May/June (please see Course Bookings page for details) and then follow on with a number of practice sessions during the summer on Sunday afternoons (this will be arranged at the time). During the sessions we will work through the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme which builds from the complete beginner through to basic sailing skills.

We find that 7yr olds and under may struggle with this course.

Please Note: Parents are expected to stay on site to help their children with boat rigging/stowing/safety ashore. The second part of the course, the practice sessions will be not be an RYA course but will be self organised by the parents on the course (this will be arranged at the time). We also ask all parents to be particularly aware of the the Safety information published on this website as some parts are particularly inportant for children.

Course outline

The course will follow the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme and progressively take participants through the three stages. It should be assumed that a student will complete 1 stage per series. The sessions can be then be repeated to gain further stages. While the course can teach the elements of sailing we also find that the non-course practice sessions are just as important to build up experience and develop skills.
